An Abundant Life - Creating Anew

The other night when I left YES Gallery, I was planning to go to a supermarket to go food shopping on my way home. I was really tired from a very long couple of days, and the weather had gotten colder again for a bit so I wasn't really in the mood to go to the supermarket which was a bit out of my way, but I felt like it was something that it was important for me to do. I write it in that way because I didn't really need to go food shopping at that market on that particular night. I had enough of the things I need on a day to day basis and the trip could have waited. But I felt like for some reason it was important for me to go that particular night to that particular market, and so I did.

I've written in these pages before about the times when I am led to do something or to go somewhere and when I follow through and do what I feel that it's important for me to do, I am always blessed in some wonderful way by a meeting or by something I find or by a place or person or something that happens that is miraculous and life changing.

On that particular night, as I set out to go to the supermarket, I was planning to walk one way but felt led to walk another. After walking a few blocks, when I turned the corner and was nearing where the market is I saw a large round woven piece of furniture that at first I took to be a large basket or storage bin or maybe even a bed for a pet that had its cushions removed. It had been put out on the sidewalk in the way that people often do with things that they no longer want or need in this area, and I was going to walk past it, but something made me turn back and look at it more closely. When I did I realized that it was made of a heavy vinyl, and that it was a coffee table that was made to be used indoors or outdoors, and that it was in perfect condition. I wasn't sure of where I could store it, but I knew it would be wonderful to have it for the sidewalk outside YES Gallery as the weather became warmer, and so I stood for a few moments thinking it over and finally decided that it was too wonderful to just leave it there and that I'd figure out where to put it when I got it back to the gallery.

I brought it back and gave it a quick cleaning that night and then the next day gave it a more thorough one, letting it dry as I arranged some new spring flowering plants in the windows and did a few other arrangements and decorations and touch ups in the gallery. For the time being I had put it up in the loft where I thought I might be able to store it against a wall behind one of the easels, but I was still trying to think if there was a better way to arrange it so that it could be used inside. A few people who had come in had gone up into the loft to browse and I'd moved it a bit to the side so they could move about more comfortably, apologizing for its being in the way and explaining that I was in the process of bringing it in. Interestingly they didn't seem to mind it, and so I began to think that maybe all I needed to do was reconfigure a few things and maybe it could actually work in that area. In thinking about a possible cover for it the night before I had remembered a vintage suede hand painted fringed shawl that I thought might fit over it and be a nice way of masking it, and after it had dried from the cleaning I moved a few things around and after pushing it a bit more to one side I draped the shawl over it. Years ago one of my Artist and Designer friends had said "What you can do with fabric!" and though I hadn't really thought about it until that point, using and finding and draping textiles of all kinds is something that I always love to do.

The newly installed coffee table has made the loft area even more beautiful, and the design of it is something that I enjoy so much. It's rustic and cozy and very boho chic as people used to always call my way of designing my apartments, and it added a dimension that makes the space even more comfortable to be in than it was before. As the weather grows warmer I may move it outside, but then again I may not. YES Gallery has a way about it that keeps surprising me with inspiring ideas and new ways of doing things as if everything I do there is being created anew.

An Abundant Life - A Recipe For Joy

In January of 2021 I began writing a blog post about the beautiful Artist and Designer Maglis Moreno who had shared a wonderful recipe with me in a very beautiful and special way. My original title was "Designing Joy" and as I wrote then, she creates beauty wherever she is in the way she lives her life and designs her surroundings, and also in the way she recognizes and documents beauty in the every day.  I've never met her in person, and we don't know each other in the way that you would say that you know someone who you have met or spent time with, but her presence is such a beautiful and open and sharing one that I feel like I know her in a way. We were connected through Instagram in one of those by chance moments of seeing each others' posts, and over the years since we've been following each other we have shared some laughs together and some joyful moments and she has shared many moments of inspiration that brighten my every day. There are some people who I follow on Instagram that come and go, but Maglis is a lovely and reliable presence. Whether posting photographs of her home, her family, a project she is working on or some of her sketches, her every day life tells a story of beauty and faith and love.

In one of her posts she had shown photographs of a dinner she had made, a roast chicken with orange sauce that was such a lovely presentation with orange slices and a golden sauce that I commented on how wonderful it looked. She offered to share her recipe with me and I always love to try new recipes from people who are willing to share them, and when I said how lovely that would be she said she was going to draw it for me which was even a more beautiful gift. When it arrived in my inbox it was truly a blessing. The recipe itself is a very special one and with her drawings it is a work of precious art. Each step is highlighted with her illustrations, and the pages tell a story of not only the goodness of the dish but of the joyful beauty of the woman who created it. It's moments like these when we meet someone across the lines of distance who becomes a presence in our lives for good that we can see the world for the beautiful place it is. Somehow in this connection there is a feeling of heaven on earth as two women share a recipe filled with joy.

The recipe she shared with me has become a regular favorite in my own kitchen, and I make it often. I've modified it slightly, using parts instead of the whole to save time in my schedule, and clementines instead of oranges, but each time I make it I see her images and remember her warmth and kindness, and I feel the joy and love that she put into the beautiful recipe and the drawings she created to share it with me.

An Abundant Life - Creating Community

A few weeks ago I wrote about meeting Hudson County Commissioner Anthony L. Romano and his invitation to me to be a guest on his show, "Stick @ Nite" to continue our conversation about YES Gallery. The show was taped on February 7 and it was such a wonderful opportunity and experience because of the genuine kindness, courtesy and professionalism of Commissioner Romano and the welcoming, helpful and professional staff of Hudson Media Group.

The show was uploaded onto YouTube this past week, and I'll share it here with so much gratitude to Commissioner Romano and Hudson Media Group for the wonderful work they do and the wonderful service they provide in so many ways to the community.

An Abundant Life - Celebrating Women

This week I have the honor of being an Ambassador for Women In Construction at the New York Build Expo at the Javits Center in New York City. It's something that I've been a part of for several years now, and it always is such a great event, and to be invited to be a part of it in this role is really something that is so special and such a blessing.

Several people I know have joked with me over the years that I do so many things that they wonder when I ever sleep, and now with the opening of my gallery last summer and a few other big projects I'm continuing to develop in the areas of food security and food system education my time is even more full. But when wonderful opportunities and invitations arise I feel it's important to accept them and somehow or other everything that needs to happen will happen if I just take a deep breath and say a prayer and sometimes many and do what I need to do in a focused way one step at a time.

New York Build brings together so many wonderful and interesting people in the construction, architecture, design and building industries that it's always full of really excellent insights and inspiration. Every year I meet someone and sometimes several people from different new companies that are doing and creating things that give me new ways of looking and thinking about the world, and there are always projects I'm working on or people I'm discussing projects with who I can make referrals to because of the truly innovative and exciting products and ideas and entrepreneurs and companies represented and sharing their work at the expo.

To be a Women In Construction Ambassador is such an honor and a blessing, and I'm so grateful to New York Build for the wonderful event they've created and for inviting me to be a part of it in this wonderful way. Celebrating and highlighting women and their roles in the wonderful work that they do as part of this vibrant and multi-faceted industry is such an important aspect of recognizing the value of encouraging diversity and in helping to grow the knowledge within the various workplace worlds, and adding new perspectives from people from many backgrounds brings more depth and layers and levels to every project and insures that there is an abundance of wealth of ideas and expertise to create successful and innovative outcomes.
